9 reasons why you should take spirulina

1)      It supplies vital anti-oxidants

4 in fact – Phycocyanin, Chlorophyll, Zeaxanthin, and Beta Carotene – these are all extremely powerful in reversing free radical damage to your body, whether from sun, chemicals, cooking, etc.. There is not much else available to humankind for body reparation, and we should ensure that we assist our bodies in rebuilding.

2)      It strengthens your immune system

Through an amazing combination of cleansing, boosting, and repair functions (see below), Spirulina improves the production of white blood cells, antibodies and cytokines to strengthen the body’s resistance against infection and sickness.

3)      Maintain cardiovascular health and lowers cholesterol

Spirulina is clinically proven to enhance your cardiovascular health through the reduction of LDL, triglyceride levels (I know of this, as my parents are both under medication for high triglycerides, and I am at double risk), and at the same time, improving your HDL levels.

4)      Improves gastrointestinal & disgestive health

Research has shown that the consistent consumption of spirulina promotes digestion and bowel function. It suppresses bad microorganisms and stimulates the growth of beneficial flora such as acidophilus and bifidus.

5)      It is an excellent detoxifier

It is well known that spirulina is nature’s richest source of “plant blood”, chlorophyll. Chlorophyll accelerates blood detoxification and helps eliminate toxin accumulation problems such as headaches, body aches, joint pains, bad breath and body odour. In fact, most people who consume spirulina for the first time in their lives, experience an interesting first 2 weeks – a few extra pimples; enhanced bowel movements; deep sleep (body repair mode), etc.! 6)      Helps you manage your weight

We’ve never believed in diet pills, diet drinks, fat burners (chemical or physical stimulation, except through exercise), or any miracle lose-weight-immediately marketing hyperboles. We believe that through a sensible diet and a regular and fundamentally strong exercise regime, you WILL achieve your ideal weight, health, and that excess fat WILL stay away. Spirulina is the first step to achieving this sensible diet as it is super nutritious, high energy, and low calorie. It is excellent for losing weight without having to suffer the typical tiredness and weakness, lethargy and nutrient deficiency associated with crash diets. Taking spirulina before meals (usually 30 minutes before) helps curb appetites and cravings that cause overeating. As it is one of the best alkaline foods available, spirulina also reduces water retention caused by acidic waste accumulation in the body.

7)      Promotes healthy, vibrant skin

I recall a recent anti-oxidant test from Nuskin using the Pharmanex BioPhotonic Scanner was at the highest end of the scale (over 50,000) WITHOUT A SINGLE ANTI-OXIDANT product in my regular diet except spirulina. I do not consume carrots, berries, supplements, green tea, acai berries, whatever-else-out-there, on a regular basis. I may consume one of them once or twice a week, and I definitely am trying to improve my diet, but I topped the scale without a single supplement. Spirulina contains more beta carotene than any other whole food, and natural beta carotene is ten times more easily assimilated by the body than synthetic beta carotene. It helps maintain healthy skin, lustrous hair and strong nails, and helps rid the body of toxins that cause blemishes and other skin problems. Its plentiful antioxidants protect the skin from premature ageing, and I can certainly attest to that personally.

8)      It contains a rare fatty acid – Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA)

Naturally occurring GLA in mother’s milk helps develop healthy babies. Studies show nutritional deficiencies can block GLA production in your body. Spirulina and mother’s milk are the only whole food sources of GLA, and other sources of GLA have to be extracted from plants such as evening primrose. Naturopathy often recommends long-term GLA consumption for auto-immune disorders, arthritis, eczema, and premenstrual syndrome.

9)      It is rich in balanced and essential protein

Athletes will especially find this useful in building lean muscle (as opposed to bulk muscle favoured by bodybuilders), as spirulina contains a natural balance of 8 essential amino acids. They enhance both aerobic and anaerobic sports performance (like playing football), and consumers of spirulina often notice the improvements the first time they take spirulina.

Spirulina is a high nutrient density superfood, ideal for aa high intensity workout. Taken before jogging or competitive sports, it delivers energy and improves stamina. Bikers, backpackers and mountain climbers will appreciate this lightweight survival food.

Athletes around the world consistently use spirulina to improve performance. The Cuban Ministry of Sports gave it to their athletes to intensify training before the 1996 Olympic games, and Cuban track stars have consumed it for many years. They claim it helps create and mend muscle mass and helps iron retention. It improves endurance and wards off cramping for marathoners. When training increases appetite, spirulina curbs hunger and the fat-load associated with eating more.

There was a time when Robert Henrikson, author of the book “Earth Food Spirulina: How this remarkable blue-green algae can transform your life and our planet“, was invited to the largest Chinese training center for 2000 athletes, he believed that he was going help them by introducing spirulina. But he soon discovered that the Chinese have been using it for over five years. Their trainers prescribed it for athletes of all sports, as it boosts the immune system and improves recovery. Chinese athletes typically use it to intensify their training, and we know how good they are today.
